#MyManifesto

I wrote #MyManifesto in a quick burst of writing last summer. It speaks to me now just as it did then; authentic, aspirational and uniquely mine. A good place to start the new year.

While it is intensely personal, there is some insight that you could apply to your firm and how you work with clients. If there are parts of this manifesto that speak to you, keep it close and make it your own.

==

Don’t waste time. Refrain from working with clients who aren’t curious, or courageous. Doing so wastes our time, our money, and keeps us from working with clients who are ready.

==

Strive for authentic clarity. Don’t fool yourself. There is a reason you do what you do. Work diligently to understand that reason and work from your purpose. All the time.

==

Practice. It takes persistence to become an expert and it doesn’t happen overnight. Move through careful, intentional practice to become who you want to be. Celebrate the small wins and move quickly past it when you’re not-quite-there. Practice.

==

Be Courageous. Joshua 1:9. Something greater is on the horizon. Even if you fall, you learn. Go . . .

==

Articulate the Choices. Deliver expert advice and give clients thoughtful options when possible. Don’t relinquish the role of expert too early.

==

Diagnose Before Prescribing. Be cautious about giving away intellectual expertise for free, or too early. Work carefully to understand the situation and the nature of the problem.

==

Be Selective. Clients should be curious, courageous and ready. Watch for clients that aren’t yet ready, and direct them to other options.

==

Share Your Perspective Continuously. You have a message to share. Define it. Then repeat it, over and over, until that message moves clients into action.

==

Don’t Care More than They Do. Know when to walk away from care-less clients. Be aware of those who demonstrate how little they hold a connection to their work. Instead, seek clients who let their purpose inspire their work.

==

Find Your Joy. Life is full of beautiful people, places and moments. Work to have the freedom for these moments and savor the time to have them.

. . . . . . . . .

A clean slate. A new start. A fresh perspective on what can drive you in the weeks ahead. Technically you can start any time, not just on January 1.

What are you waiting for? Write your own manifesto. What’s important to you?
